MCcarthy Obanor and Rasheedat Ajibade at the weekend emerged the winners of the first edition of the Nigeria National Freestyle Football Championships in Lagos.
Obanor had to contend with Mayowa Bababunmi, a medical doctor for the ultimate prize in the men’s final while Ajibade, who plies her trade as a professional footballer with FC Robo of Lagos defeated Chidinma Okeke in the women’s final.
Lagosians defy the rains to be part of the Freestyle Football Championship which offered sportainment as music,dance and cheerleading lit up the event.
Apart from winning the sum of N1m each, Obanor also won for himself a new GAC car and will also be representing Nigeria at the World Super Ball Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
The last four contestant in the male and female categories were rewarded with cash prizes starting from the fourth position who both went home with the sum of N250,000 each in the men and women’s events. The two third placed contestant were rewarded with the sum of N500,000 while the runners-up earned N750,000 each for their display.
The chairman of Feet ‘n’ Tricks International, the organisers of the Freestyle Football Championship, Valentine Ozigbo, promised a better outing in 2018 while also appreciating all those who were part of the event.
“I want to appreciate all those who made this event possible and hopefully we are going to have a better competition in 2018,” he said.
“Apart from those that supported us this year like GAC motors, FIRS, all the media houses and others who in one way or other supported us, there were so many others who because of time constraints could not come on board, so we are expecting them next year.
“It is going to be bigger and better next year, we are going to be working will all that were part of this year’s and more others that will be joining us.”
