Snooker is set to make a major come back into the sports scene in Nigeria as Lagos Country Club (LCC) Billiards and Snooker section hosts the maiden edition of the Femi Robinson Open Snooker Classic in celebration of the Billiards and Snooker icon in Nigeria.
Late Femi Robinson, former Chairman of the Billiards and Snooker association of Nigeria ( BASAN) popularly known as Ife Araba in the television series, Village Headmaster was an icon in the sports who championed its development in Nigeria.
At the recently held draws for the 1st Femi Robinson Open Classic that took place at the LCC on Sunday, 28th October 2018 Adewale Osomo, Olugbemi Fagbemi, Femi Akinlade, Daffe Agbah, Emeka Egbube and John Ebiekpi were seeded amongst 27 players drawn from LCC, Ikoyi Club and others competing to win the trophy and N200,000 first prize money.
In Nigeria, Snooker has remained an elite sport because it is only found in the very exclusive member only clubs but the increased interest and influx of younger players into the sport has made clubs re-appraise the role of the Billiards and Snooker. Dr. Ahmed Sanni, LCC Sports Secretary spoke with asentv.tv
“Lagos Country Club is in the process of re-development and we are capitalizing on sports. This Femi Robinson Classics is coming at a time when a lot more people are joining the Snooker and Billiards section of the club”.
Wole Robinson, son of late Femi Robinson and Chairman of the LCC Snooker and Billiards Section noted why the event was being organized.
” As a family, we wanted a platform to immortalize my father and because of his love for Billiards we decided a tournament of this nature will be most appropriate”.
Wole Akintola and Emeka Egbuleze spoke about their impression of the draws and expectation from the classic.
“What Wole Robinson is doing here is a very good initiative. it is going to seriously promote the sport of snooker in Nigeria. This resurrection of competitive snooker is very good for the sports. It is going to engage a lot of us and make us better. ”
And Emeka was most concerned about the opportunities in the sport. He said
” We need a lot of encouragement in the game because we have a lot of players outside who are ready to play this game but they do not have the oppounity to come into such a club. ”
The Late Femi Robinson Open snooker Classis holds from the 2nd – 4th November, 2018 at the Snooker and Billiards section of the Lagos Country Club with a N350,000.00 total prize money event.
