Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior Grammar School, Ojokoro and Isale Eko Grammar School, Lagos Island, are the champions in the boys and girls’ categories of the GTBank Principals Cup Season 8.
The match was played at the Main Bowl of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The Housing Estate boys defeated Ikotun Senior High School, Ikotun, 2-0 in a highly entertaining encounter. Thousands of students and dignitaries were wowed with the artistry of the game on display, sometimes skills beyond their ages.
Two strikes from Lawal David in the sixth minute and Ayomide Moses Toriola in the nineteenth minute was enough for the Ijaiye Housing School to make the competitions champions list,although Ademola Daniel of Ikotun Senior High School hit the woodwork in the seventeenth minute of the second half which sparked a reaction from the crowd,nevertheless it was just a momentary consolation for the Ikotun boys.
In the girls final played earlier, Isale Eko Grammar School, Lagos Island pipped Government Senior College, Agege 5-4 on penalties. The match had ended 0-0 at regulation time.The two teams had met at the preliminary stage where it ended 1-1 but it was a different story in the final where one team had to be crowned.
The two champions were rewarded with a cash prize of N1,000,000 (One Million Naira), while the runners up were also rewarded accordingly. The Principals Cup remains a critical grassroot initiative for the development of football along the educational structure and has produced many prominent members of Nigeria football national team in the past.
