The 8th edition of the Africa Arm-wrestling Championship came to a Spectacular closure yesterday at
the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas hall at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Surulere Lagos. The championship which started on Thursday 29th June, 2017 with the congress of the Africa Arm-wrestling Federation and clinics for athletes and referees. Athletes from Egypt, Mali, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria, host country contested for the over 170 medals and trophies.
Participants contested in 4 categories; disable, women, men and youth in weights. Having won the highest of gold medals, Nigeria was adjudged the winner of the championship by the WAF head referee, Youssif Nasir for winning 19 gold medals.
asentv.tv spoke with Engr Douglas Dickson, president Nigeria Arm wrestling federation. While pleading for sponsorship, he said:
“For the corporate world, I want to beg them or plead with them to invest in Nigeria Arm wrestling”.
While speaking with asentv.tv, Mr Charles Osei Asibey, president of Ghana Arm wrestling federation said;
“We have introduced Arm wrestling in Ghana in just a year and we are spreading all over the country. Currently, it is in six regions.”
“Arm wrestling has a federation in Egypt and an international federation. International federation since 1967. So, very old federation. Arm-wrestling in official competition is very different from friendly one. Why? Arm wrestling in professional championship. We use arm-wrestling table which is with specification to protect the athlete from injury”.
Mr Charles Osei, president Ghana Arm wrestling federation received the WAF flag from El-haary Zien, president Arm-wrestling federation of Africa signifying Ghana’s acceptance to host the 2018 edition of the championship.
