The Nigeria Scrabble Federation has commended the management, Staff, people and members of the Nigeria Liquefied and Natural Gas, NLNG, Finima Bonny Island Scrabble club, the management of the NLNG and her Managing Director, Eng. Tony Attah for the warm reception in honor of the Victorious team to the 2017 World Scrabble Championship Country Trophy held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Speaking while presenting the team and trophy to the President of the NLNG RA Club, Emmanuel Archibong who represented the management Director, President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Suleiman Gora said the commitment and dedication of the players gave them the victory.
“These players are not new to victory; in fact they have become nemesis to other African and world players. Winning is no longer news to them, what is hampering their progress is lack of sponsors both from Government and corporate organizations”.
“What is happening here today is the relationship that we have been looking forward to in terms of synergy and collaboration between us and captains of Industries. For the development of Scrabble, we always look at kids like the ones here present from NLNG RA International School, a replica of what happened in Lagos during the Winifred Awosika National Scrabble championship for Under 12 years” says Gora.
The Scrabble Boss said people who have passion for the game of Scrabble, has been the driving force of the achievements of the Federation.
He lamented the omission of the game from the 2018 National Sports Festival come December, however assured that the Federation will continue to agitate for its re introduction, not just for mere appearance, but for the sustainability of the past records of overwhelming achievements this Federation has attained in the past years.
These include African Championship trophy which was won by Dennis Ikekeregor in 2004 and 2006, Wellington Jighere in 2008 and 2010, as well as Solomon Nsikak Etim in 2014 and 2016 among others.
“As you know Scrabble is one game that has earned Nigeria Trophies. Nigeria has won Africa 11 times as well as two Country World Cup trophies in 2015 and 2017, which has made us the best Scrabble playing Nation in the world. In fact we are the current world number two on the individual category after winning the individual trophy in 2015 by Jighere Wellington”.
On the future plans, Gora said the federation is working with National Initiative for the Blind to make them achieve their purpose in life through engaging in the game of Scrabble.
“We have been able to get the Brail Board and the Brail dictionary, designed in such a way to enable the Blind play the Game. They have been practicing and we are at the stage of signing Memorandum of understanding. Next is The Hemophilia Group, they are not allowed to play physical sports due to their tendency to bleed to death. They are very fragile in skin, so to bridge the gap of sporting activities in such persons, we are granting them opportunities to play Scrabble in Schools in the 6 geopolitical Zones of the Federation in Synergy with their Foundation”.
“With my re-election as President of the Federation, my attention will be focusing on the development of the youth in partnership with Corporate Nigerians”
Suleiman Gora proposes the Nigeria Scrabble Federation Open Clinic with Children ages 7 to 11anchored by the Captain Scrabble Section Barikpega Bright Nwizug and his amiable team at the Nigeria Liquefied and Natural Gas, NLNG Residential Area International School in Bonny Island, Rivers State.
Responding, Managing Director NLNG, Engineer Tony Attah through his representative, President NLNG RA Club Bonny, Emmanuel Archibong who received the team which include some Federation’s board members as well as Notable African and National champions expresses readiness and desire to support the game of Scrabble, promised to excel at the next Oil Industry Games scrabble event.
In conclusion, Engr. Tony Attah, promises to partner with the Scrabble Federation by offer unreserved service in whatever capacity, especially by engaging formidable Coaching Crew headed by the National Coach, Prince Anthony Ikolo who has made it possible for Nigeria to be ranked as the Best Scrabble Playing Nation in the World to come and help their kids.
