The Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) is not well structured according to Ex-international Austin Eguavoen who recently quit his job as the manager of the Premier league side Sunshine Football Club of Akure.
Speaking on a television programme monitored in Benin, the former Super Eagles coach complained about officiating in the league which leaves much to be desired,as he defended Sunshine Fc goalkeeper David Ariyo who was handed a 12 match ban by the League Management Company(LMC).
“I know Ariyo very well he can not do what he was accused of doing,Ariyo is a pastor and he can not assault a referee as claimed in the report that indicted him”.
He also disagreed the with the long standing culture of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Referees Committee appointing referees for the Nigeria Professional League which is administer by the League Management Company.
“The LMC is trying their best to improve the league but there are somethings beyond their control which are hampering the development of the league and one of them is the inability to appoint referees,so most times they don’t have power to sanction any referee that err”.
“I have tried to coach one or two NPFL clubs and I have not been able to adapt to the setting because it is frustrating”.
Eguavoen advocated a change in attitude from all stakeholders in the NPFL which will go a long way to develop the country’s domestic football while he cited the recent results of Nigerian clubsides in continental engagement as appalling because of the win at all cost syndrome which is adversely affecting the growth of football in the country.
“We are nowe looking for half caste to play for Nigeria while our league is not well structured”.
As a former Super Eagles coach when he was asked about his opinion on the move to make Technical adviser of Super Eagles Gernot Rohr submit his team list for scrutiny by the NFF technical committee,he opposed the idea saying it is counterproductive.
“The man has been given the job allow him do his job with less interference”.
He also believes that NPFL side, Plateau United who are currently topping the league table is good enough to win the league.
“You have to give it Kennedy Boboye,he is doing a great job with that team and he also has the backing of Plateau state government,if he continues to enjoy the backing of the government they will do well as a team”.
