First timer at the Lagos ITTF Challenge Sarthak Ghandi has upset the apple cart to book a place in the final of the Nigeria open.
The Indian overcame a strong opposition from homeboy Abiodun Olabode whose victory over number one seeded Aruna Quadri is still a surprise to many especially the supporters of the Africa’s best player.
Sarthar raced to a 3-0 lead before Abiodun caught up with him at 3-3,the excitement of the home crowd was rapturous until the world number 75 picked the final set in grand style.
In a chat with www.asentv.tv, Ghandi said he was thrilled to have made it to the final in his first appearance in the ITTF Challenge.
“I feel great for this big achievement,this is my first time in Nigeria as welll as my debut in this challenge.
when ask if he is under any form of pressure if he meets the number 2 seeded player,Egyptian Omar Assar in the final
“I won’t mind playing anybody,I am not under pressure,I am free,I just want to enjoy myself”
Sarthak Gandhi also defeated number 3 seeded player Quatar’s Li Ping in his first game in the men’s single.
On why he is not playing cricket which is a more popular sport in India his home country.
“Table Tennis is growing in India, am not the number one player in my country but you can see what I have been able to do,that shows that Table Tennis is big in India”.
