Last week the live show stage of “The Vioce Nigeria” reality show started which is been produce by Multichoice DSTV. We witnessed a very keenly contested events as most of the first 16 contestant were able to put up their “A” so as to impress the coaches who also served as the judges.
We can’t talk about the show without taking a quick peep at the attire of some of the contestants, judges and others. Patoranking, Timi Dakolo and Ik, show anchor decided to go traditional showing us the beauty of the South East and South South Don attire. The Don and the gold stud with the white inner shirt of Timi can be easily classified as a show stopper, Patoranking and Ik made their own fashion statement with the design of the modern Don style.
Waje was beautiful in her style but we can not say the same of Yewi Alade whose white and black dress with an awkward looking collar that made her look like a baby elephant with the wide ears sticking out raises many question. who is her stylist?
The design of Precious’s black and white attire which seems like a combination of our traditional Don
and the Victorian longtail coat with a half tail in front which made him look more like one of the characters in spongebob cartoon or like the character on the joker in a pack of cards. One wonders what the idea of mixing our beautiful tradition fashion style and the English Victorian style was about. Was he trying to create a coat or something totaling different?
We can talk about the show without talking about the choices of the coaches. Timi choose Precious or Bada. That one get as e be. Even though I am not a musician but even as a lay man i know what is good from bad or best from better. Do we all have to have high pitch notes or be able to achieve that? No matter how we praise Whitney Houston, we can never describe her as better than Barry White or Luther Vandross.
Today, the next 16 contestants will be up to give us another great show. Please, the coaches should not spoil the game with their dodgy choice. What we needed was a total different set of judges to do the selection so that the show will produce the very best vocal artist.
Finally, one expect that the name of a product should speak for the product. Is the Voice Nigeria a platform to identify and promote that true Nigerian voice or another way of imposing the western style of singing especially when most of the contestants are being tested with songs credited to foreign artist.
