Wright picked up his third European Tour win from four events with his success at the Glaspalast over the weekend, continuing a superb 2017 which has now seen him win seven tournaments.
However, the triumph was also Wright’s second win in a European Tour final over Van Gerwen this year – having never previously overcome the Dutchman in a decider.
Van Gerwen had claimed victory in ten finals across the past three years before Wright’s March win at the German Darts Championship, with the world number one also victorious since in a Players Championship final in Milton Keynes.
“To beat Michael in the final is fantastic, and the 6-0 result is brilliant as well,” said Wright. “I’ve changed this year.
“I lost in so many finals against Michael. I learned from that and I went back to the drawing board and learned how to beat him.
“I’m not going to beat him all the time – that would be nice – but I know roughly how to beat him.”
Wright will bid to win a fourth European Tour title at the Gibraltar Darts Trophy from May 12-14, with Van Gerwen opting not to enter the next PDC European Tour event ahead of his participation in the Betway Premier League Play-Offs next week.
