Onikan stadium turns carnival like for GTBank Principal Cup

It was a carnival like atmosphere at the Onikan stadium, venue of the semi finals matches of the season 8 edition of the GTBank Principal’s cup which was watched by fans, students of the competing schools and dignitaries comprising representative of the Ministry of Education, Sports commission, principals cup alumni, principals of schools and Miss Tolupe Onipede representing  GTBank, sponsor of the cup.

Amongst the alumni’s present at the Onikan stadium included Henry Nwosu, Tajudeen Disu, Waidi Akanni Tajudeen Disu, Taiwo Elegwua, Taiwo Oloyode and Babajide Oloyode, all former Super Eagle players.

The fans and students at the Onikan stadium were thrilled by music provided by Kolawole Akinbolu (a.k.a DJ kool Jay). The students did want to be left out of the excitement that filled thet air as they danced to the rhythm of the beautiful sound blasting from the powerful speakers.

The first match the Onikan stadium between Sanya Senior Grammer Sch, Surulere and Goverment Snr Collge, Agege ended 0 – 0 at full time afterwhich it proceeded into penalties which ended 3 -5. asentv kJYsports spoke with Odalume Victory Eheche, .the most valuable player of the match. She said

“I feel excited and and very happy”

Been captain, she further noted;

“it was not easy easy, but God helped me. Through God all things are possible. So, i have the mind that T can lead them through” ..

In the other girls semi final match between Ikorodu Senior High Sch , Ikorodu and Isale Eko Grammar School, lagos Island, Ikorodu Senior High School opened scoring in the first half and at the start of the  play in the second half,  Aliyah Saheed  who happened to be the tiniest player on the field scored an equaliser for the Isale Eko girls which mesmerised fans. In  a quick solo run similar to the move of Cameroonian Roger Miller against Colonbia goal keeper Rene Higuita in the 1990 world cup Aliyah Saheed masterfully tucked the ball in the lower left corner after beating the goal keeper.

At the run of play in the second half saw a more determined effort by their opponent which saw Aminat Surami score the second girl for Isale Eko girls.

After Aliyah Saheed received the golden ball after been voted most valuable player, she spoke to KJYsports.

” i scored because they are leading use 1 – 0 ”

And responding to our question about how she felt. she responded


KJYsports spoken to  Balogun Rashid, coach of Isale Eko Grammar School.

“In the game of football all things been equal; we have done our homework but eventually we faced some challenges and we tried to correct that and thank God we were able to make it”

When asked able the advice he had for girls who do not play football, he had this to say;

“what I would advice to female is that in football what men can do, the famele too can well do more than that sometime”.

Furthermore, he noted;

“For the girls at home, they should come and play football. Football is good even for the girls”

In the boy’s came out determined to play like most of their football idols that they watch in the Europe league. The semi final match between Ijaiye Housing Estate Snr Grammar School, Ojokoro and Odogunyan Snr Grammar School, Ikorodu ended 2 – 0.

asenntv KYJsports spoke to Oyeleke Wale, coach of Ijaiye Housing Estate Snr Grammar School, Ojokoro. He said:

“We give glory to God for the victory. I believe by the grace of God we are going to win the final notwithstanding/regardless of the opponent whether Ikotun or Muslim College, I believe by the end of the day God will grant our efforts with success. As you know we are debutants and we have not reached this place before.”

The final semi final match between Muslim Snr College, Oworonshoki and Ikotun Senior High School, Ikotun ended goalless at full time. It was sad loss for Muslim College who lost a penalty in the first half as victory slipped by when they also lost the eventual final penalties shootout 3 – 4.

kJYsports spoke to Oki Habib, goal keeper of Ikotun Snr High School who was voted man of the match. He  said;

“I am so happy because I have never been the man of the match in any match I have played in my life.

What was going through your mind when your school was losing all the scoring chances?

“I was thinking what is it? It has not been happening before. We were losing all our opportunities of scoring the goal but it was not happening today.”

He further said:

“I was praying to God because PK is a game of luck. I began to pray to my almighty God so he can help us through it”

At the close of proceeding, KJYsports took out time to speak with Waheed Akanni, former Super Eagles player about the impression about the event. He said:

“ The Children need more coaching, it is very obvious. I don’t know what the game masters go through now a day”
